AS GOOD AS YOU'LL FIND AT ANY CORNER CONCESSION STAND IN CHICAGO. Chris and Rob's offers a remarkable selection of unremarkable concession-oriented foods: Hot dogs (Chicago dogs, cheese dogs, chili dogs), Polish sausages, Italian beef, Gyros, burgers, and pizza. A self-proclaimed 'Chicago taste authority' the Chicago dogs, italian beef and Maxwell Street Polish dogs served here all pass muster -- They are as good as you'll find at any corner concession stand in Chicago. THEREIN LIES THE DILEMMA. When I go to Chicago for an Italian beef or Chicago dog, I might SETTLE for a corner concession stand... but I'm really craving the kind of experience you can only get at Gene & Jude's, Hot Doug's, Red Hot Ranch, Superdawg, Old Town Social, or Jimmy's Red Hots. C&R's can DEFINITELY serve up a taste of Chicago that is better than you can do for yourself at home -- but that isn't enough to keep me coming back. The menu and the location have a lot of potential, but not a lot of personality. The addition of one or two signature hot dogs that you can only get at C&R's would go a long way. I want to walk in and order a Minnesota-inspired Ragnarök Dog that delivers Norse Armageddon on a bun. The St Paul location of C&R has some great features including a roll-up garage door with table side dining and a wooden railroad car dining room. I'd love to see what an experienced restaurant designer could do with the space... and the menu. In the meantime, I'll seek out destinations such as The Wienery, Snuffy's and Uncle Frankie's. However, if I happen to be in the 7th street neighborhood... I might settle for C&R's.

We used to eat here a lot before changing our diet for the better. This place serves as a rare treat, especially when the deals are irresistible. We got Italian Beef sandwiches, though my husband got the one with the sausage also inside (a bit much for me). The boy got two Chicago dogs, which he enjoyed. The IB sandwiches here are good, just remember to ask for it to be wet. It's much better, though messier, when dipped in the jous. We also get the tots to go with our sandwiches and dogs, as we've found the fries to be inedibly salty. If you avoid the fries (my opinion), you're probably in for a good, filling, meal here.

Easily one of the best chili dog, Chicago dog, and hot dog places in the Twin Cities.

My girlfriend and I came here last week to get our wiener fix. We really wanted BJ's but they were closed so we settled with Chris and Rob's. I have a feeling you're reading into this wrong.. Anyway, the place is located on its own island off of 7th street. You pull up and park like you're part of the Italian Job. The guy who waited on us was nice enough and the grunts in the back looked sanitary enough to be cooking. We ordered 2 Chicago dogs (One with cheese), A Maxwell street polish, a Chili dog and the breaded mushrooms, all to go. Our order was completed in good time and we headed home. We began unwrapping and I took a bite of the Maxwell Street polish, man it was good. Then I realized it was my girlfriends so I gave it up, but not without a fight. I started on the mushrooms. The only thing more abundant than the blandness was the... oh, nevermind.. that was all it had. I don't think a grain of salt, or mushroom flavor for that matter, had ever grazed those poor fungi. The Chicago dog wasn't much better. I hate to admit this, but the ones that I got from Sonic were a 10 compared to these. There was literally nothing special about them. They were covered in stuff but had no real zip to any of the flavors. Nothing to make you go "Damn, I should put this on all of my hotdogs". Nothing to satisfy any part of your palate. I've never had a legitimate Chicago Dog (Unless you ask those who say these are legit) but I hope this isn't a good example of one. The Chicago cheese dog was even worse. It has all the character of the first Chicago Dog, only with flavorless, watery Cheese.. sauce? It hit the trash. Last up was the Chili dog, but upon removing the wrapper, we discovered they got our order wrong and gave us another Chicago Dog. Because why wouldn't that happen. I'm not sure I could stomach giving this place another try. I almost feel like I'm being a bastard after reading the 'good' reviews, but this place is a no-go for me.

It's fine for what it is, a hamburger and hot dog place but, when that's all that you're putting on my plate, atmosphere and customer service go a long way. My Chicago Dog was okay, my son's Chili Dog was fine. The decor was typical fast food fashion with a few Chicago remnants thrown in for good measure. I guess I'm jaded because my Chicago Dog craving is usually satisfied at Uncle Franky's in Plymouth where you feel welcome from the moment you walk in the door. At this place, the employees had placed a mop bucket to block off a third of the restaurant 4 hours before closing time! So, if all you want is a dog and don't feel like boiling it up yourself.... Head on over but I wouldn't make a special trip.

Good, greasy Chicago food. Just the way you would want it. The Chicago dog with all of the fixings is hard to beat. The Italian sausage with peppers comes pretty greasy, but its manageable. The even deliver around Saint Paul if you spend $10.

This place has some pretty decent Chicago style food. I tried a chili cheese dog, burger and fries. The chili cheese dog was pretty good. The chili was good, and the onions were awesome. The fries were damn good. The burger was a let down. Chicago has really thin patties but these were thicker. They also had some seasoning on them I didn't care for. The service was great. When they found out that my wife was gluten free (they just started to carry a gf crust) they started recommending lots of other places for her to try. We will have to come back to try the pizzas and beef.

Will defintely be back. In the mood for an Italian beef and really didn't feel like trying to make my own. Too hungry to wait around for imy own to cook. Ordered the Italian Beef. It was very good especially with the Giardinera peppers which were a bit too hot for me. I thought it would clear my nose out, but just the opposite, it stuffed me up nose and stomach. The bread is a tad too oily for me, but the meat was good and the peppers were too, just a tad too hot. The cheese curds were very good. I was thinking they would be more like the fair kind, but they were smaller with more of a thicker breading. They were still good. Lots of options on the menu. Quick service Nice option for a quick bite.

Fun dive over on W 7th St in St. Paul. I had the chicago dogs with all the fixings. Nice atmosphere with a couple of TV's with sports on. My vegetarian friend was able to get a fine salad too. Parking wasn't great but I found a spot pretty quick. Didn't bring the kids but a good spot too bring them.

I have to say, I was a little surprised that Chris & Rob's popped up on my Yelp list -- I thought I'd reviewed it before. In all, I would say this is a good place to satisfy your Chicago craving -- whether that's an Italian beef sandwich or a good Vienna beef hot dog. Housed in an old Chicago-themed diner car, it's a lot of fun to visit. It's not fancy, but it's fun. I love the hot dogs here -- when I want a big, sloppy chili cheese dog or a traditional Chicago dog, this place does the trick for me every time. The Italian beef is decent, but not amazing. Still, will satisfy the craving. They do have some beers in bottles available and the pizza is OK too. In general, it won't stack up to the Chicago food in Chicago, but if you are craving that kind of food, it makes a totally decent and presentable recreation right here in St. Paul. Street parking is usually easy to find. Prices are a bit steep for a hot dog and such, but sometimes you have to pay for the thing you want. Staff is generally friendly and helpful. Oh, and they'll serve you a basket of tots drowning in cheez wiz. Because that's awesome.

Consistently good Chicago style hotdogs and fresh, hot french fries. O.k. service from the counter staff. Seems to me, however, that 3 dogs, a large fry, and two beers ought not cost over $20.

  • Debra S.

While I appreciate your reply and your time Rob with all due respect your hot dog tastes no different-better or worse than all the others I have had in my life, sorry. Four dollars is too much for a hot dog, period. Good luck.

St. Paulites shouldn't have to go outside the city for a decent dawg, and now we don't have to. I had the pizza delivery once, and it was ok, but then delivery isn't limited to just pizza. Throw in hotdogs and Italian beef sandwiches, no problem. Chicago style is too rich for my blood, but it seems they do get their meat from Chicago.Roomy enough inside, very nice digs. The side of the building opens up and that's a nice feeling when the weather's decent. Yet another need fulfilled on West 7th.

Ok, I know I said I wouldn't go back, but I did. Good news is that I thought I may have been too hard on them the first time; Bad news is, they are losing another star after my second visit. This time I dined in and they remembered to give me everything I ordered, but the burger was disappointing. It was actually two small patties that seemed like they were steamed and laid overlapping on the bun -- anyone ever eat at JT''s in West St Paul?? If so, you know what I'm talking about. Absolutely no taste whatsoever. The fri-fries were just ok. The bun was fresh and tasty, but I kind of doubt they baked it themselves.

I see that several reviewers have listed CRCTA's use of Vienna brand hot dogs as a good thing. Not hailing from Chicago, I wouldn't know. I personally don't really find them to be that great of a dog, as I prefer something -- like maybe a Hebrew National or perhaps a Thousand Hills grass-fed -- with a little more substance and "snap" to the skin. When I'm loading condiments on top of a hot dog, I want one that can stand up to the abuse. As such, I think the "Fire Polish" is a better option. Even though I'd hesitate to call it a truly GOOD polish sausage, it does provide a bit more support to this restaurant's generous Chicago dog toppings, and its mild heat works well with the sport peppers and sweet relish. I've never been to one of CRTCTA's physical locations, but I can review their delivery service. Honestly, it's not the best; the food arrives somewhat cold, and they aren't terribly fast. The last time they delivered, our order was swapped with another one. The driver did his best to resolve the situation, offering us the incorrect order for free while he ran back to get the right one. We elected to just take some of the tots to hold us over (there's only so many hot dogs a human body can absorb), and he returned with the replacement order quite quickly. While the mix-up was frustrating, I was ultimately satisfied with the attempt to make things right. Some yelpers have complained about the prices. I suppose $3+ is a bit steep for a hot dog, but I think comparing these prices to those at a ballpark is something of an exaggeration (C'mon, folks, a Twins ballpark hot dog with the works is like, $7). I haven't felt ripped off when ordering from this place; Roughly $9 (pre-20% delivery tip) for two loaded hot dogs and a large tater tots seems fairly reasonable to me. At least, it seems to be about on par with the price of the equivalent amount of food at a fast food joint. In any case, if you are looking to order take-out/delivery, but desire a change of pace, you should give these guys a shot.

I was actually really excited to try Chris and Rob's after my first beef sandwich experience at the famous Al's Italian Beef Sandwich in Chicago. Unfortunately, this place doesn't even come close by comparison. The service was absolutely horrid. The guy behind the counter couldn't have cared less about the customers. I got the sense that maybe he was hung over or just really tired, because he didn't seem to understand what people were saying to him and was moving more slowly than the pace of orders would allow. I was in line and saw him mess up two out of three orders in front of me; one got a refund after a brief "chat" and one had to wait for her food to be remade after insisting that they didn't record her order correctly, which seemed completely realistic after I got my chance at the counter. Fortunately, they did get my order correct, but the food was not very good. It was a greasy overpriced mess. The beef sandwich didn't offer much in terms of flavor and was a severe disappointment. My wife ordered a hot dog and we shared a side of chili cheese fries. On both accounts, I thought that it was a complete ripoff for the prices that they are charging. I won't be going back.

Chris and Rob's is several blocks from our home, so we, ( my wife, 3 children under 9 and I ) frequent the place fairly often. They have plenty of unhealthy menu options that Kids all love and grown ups need to indulge in every so often. It's not too often that I'm in the mood for a good hot dog, but when the mood strikes Chris and Rob's is an old reliable. It's a little on the spendy side for this type of fare, but no more so than ballpark prices and it's much better. I haven't tried much on the menu other than the various hot dogs and deep fried appetizers, but the Italian Beef and the Gyro look pretty decent - with tater tots. The largest of the two dining areas is in box car and done up appropriately with Chicago sports memorabilia. Plenty of kids after school, so you won't get too many bad looks when yours freak out. Friendly counter service.

I have been here 3 or 4 times now and I have had wonderful experiences every time. I love the brats the Chicago dogs and the pizza. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great inexpensive bite to eat. I look forward to the next time I come back!!

I've driven past this place numerous times and always wanted to stop in. I've long been a devoted fan of the Chicago-style hot dog, so a Vienna Beef sign outside a restaurant is like catnip to me. When we entered, we were greeted by someone who must have been an owner, or at the very least a manager. He was incredibly friendly and helpful, and helped my husband (who's a little less familiar with Chicago cuisine) to navigate the menu. I chose my old standby, the Chicago-style hot dog, "dragged through the garden", and Husband picked an Italian beef sandwich. For my part, the hot dog was good but a little underwhelming; I've had better. But the tater tots were crisp and delicious, and the little piece of beef I stole off of Husband's sandwich was like a bite of meaty heaven. The atmosphere of the place was super-cool; I love the dining-car feel, and it's fun to watch the traffic go by on West Seventh. We spent about $16 for the two of us, including the hot dog, the Italian beef sandwich, a large order of tots, and two beverages. Not bad, and I'm sure we'll be back.

I don't know if was me or the rainy evening but this just didn't hit the spot tonight. The building is nicely decorated and clean, and our service was pleasant and prompt. The food was unremarkable. I tried the maxwell polish and a chicago style. Add a bottle of summit EPA for a total of 11 bucks. I stole some fries from a friend. Buns were soggy, the regular dog lacked flavor and was overpowered by the relish. The polish dog with fried onions was quite a bit better, I'd recommend it. Mustard was standard yellow, nothing to write home about. Fries lacked seasoning, we doused them with salt and pepper. I dunno. I live a few blocks from Bulldog and don't see a reason to make the trek over to Chris and Rob's. I guess I just don't respect their authoritah!

the location is cool the prices are kinda steep for a hot dog but stull cheaper than the gopher bar.. that place use to have better prices for there dogs. its not like it takes skill to boil a hot dog slap on some butter and toast the bread then chop onions and cheese ..

Our Dive-of-the-Month team went here today. The other Yelp reviews don't match my experience. There's nothing outstanding here. I also felt I was ripped off. I had a 'Italian Sandwich.' So, an Italian sandwich comes with hot, fried peppers and melted cheese, right? Wrong. When you are prompted for these, realize they are *extras* and they will charge you more without telling you this. My sandwich, with no sides, plus a small Coke cost $9.97! Yikes. The beef in my sandwich was overcooked deli meat that could have come from a Hormel seal pack. And there were no knives or forks to be found. I know what an 'Italian Sandwich' ought to be . This wasn't it. Mine was a 'meta' sandwich. A simulation.

Not a Chicago dog for me if it's not a Vienna Beef. And the bun was soggy. Everything else is good. One star for the cool train car!

Every time I'm craving for the food of my birthplace I find myself in here. From the Chicago dogs, to the Maxwell street polish this Chicago raise dago loves this place. They use the real ingredients! Vienna all beef hot dogs! Poppy Seed buns! Nuclear green relish. Sport peppers and even Goose Island beer!

In Chicago, Caesar salads must be composed of brown, limp, overdressed lettuce sprinkled with powered parmesan cheese. As I stared at my inedible meal, all I could think was "I paid $6.49 for this?" As difficult as it is to screw up a salad that is made with only 4 ingredients, Chris and Rob's managed to accomplish that feat. I will never order from this place again. I paid $27 to have a salad, Chicago dog, chili cheeseburger and cheese bread delivered, and almost all of the food ended up in the garbage can. Definitely not worth the price.

This place serves the real deal. Authentic Chicago dogs and Italian Beefs. It's in a cool train car type building on W. 7th Street. I didn't give them five stars because they are a couple bucks more expensive than comparable Chicago Sandwich restaurants like Pappy's on White Bear and Maryland or Uncle Franky's near Broadway and Central.

beautiful beautiful hot dogs. I wish they were open late late and that after a night at mancini's we could wander down in a drunken stupor and spill chili and cheese on our shirts after tipping our hot dogs skyward. But seriously, I have had my share of chicago dogs, and Chris and Robs has it down pat. Reminds me of Demon Dogs in Chicago w/o the rattle of the train and city and street music. But eating in what used to be a functional train car comes pretty close. I will note that there was a blister on the end of my dog that looked like a fingernail making the whole thing look way too much like a finger. Did it stop me from eating it? HELL NO. J got the beef (i tried it, twas tasty) and M got the Chicago dog with all its veggie glory.

I stopped by this afternoon for a quick, cheap bite to eat... I ordered a chili dog, a plain hot dog, and a fountain soda. Total bill, $9.37!!! Really!? No fries. No chips. No tater tots. No beer. Nothing "extravagant" Nine-f'n-Thirty-Seven! ...And my fountain drink (a Barq's Root Beer) was one of the worst self-service fountain mixes I've had in a long time. Watered down and weak. Blech. Certainly not worth the nearly two dollars I paid for the ten cents worth of sugar water. I can't think of any reason why a lame chili dog, a plain hot dog and a soda should cost $9.37 anywhere in this country (except in New York City or at a Major League ballpark) - unless, of course, those hot dogs had been had been blessed by the Blues Brothers and the Penguin, and hand carried by Mike Ditka himself from Chicago to West 7th Street. I am pretty sure this didn't happen since I know, for a fact, that Jake Blues is dead. (RIP) I'm not totally knockin' the joint. Chris and Rob's Italian beef sandwiches are tasty (and recommended). The corn dogs are standard corn dog affairs, but good (and 23% cheaper than a plain dog!). The tater tots are a nice addition to the menu, over standard fries... Service is generally quick. The joint is clean. I usually like visiting Chris and Rob's - except when I feel like I'm getting screwed, and not even getting a kiss afterward. So my tip is this -- dining on a budget? Stick with the corn dogs and a cup of water. Just won the Powerball? Then get a couple plain dogs and soda... Heck, even offer to pick up your date's tab too.

Its solid. My kids go to the daycare nearby so this place is a place we can go after work if din din at home isn't an option. The kids like the place, the place tolerates the kids... Food is okay. I mostly get their pizza, and its okay. They have beer, and some okay beer too. TVs. Two of those. Its okay. They have wi-fi, which is cool. Prices seem reasonable. I'll go back there, its not awesome, but its adequate.

Want an authentic Chicago Dog or Italian Beef? This is the only place in town I've found that does it right. Co-workers from Chicago agree, this place is the real deal. I would almost say the Italian Beef here is better than Portello's in Chicago. The Maxwell Street Polish is good, but not as good as Portello's. I have never tried thier pizza, I can never pass up the hot dogs, polish and Italian Beef. The staff is always fast and great, and the decor is pretty cool. Great prices. But don't be that guy who complains about Chicago sports teams being on the TV's instead of your beloved Vikings or Twins...it's a Chicago themed restaurant, where people from Chicago or Chicago sports fans go to watch the game, if you want to watch Minnesota teams go to one of the many other restaurants or bars in town. I almost incited a bar brawl when a guy tried to get them to switch off the Bears game.

We ordered in from Chris and Rob's at my office because we had heard such good things about the food. And the reviews were spot on! Love the brats and cheese curds. Even the bread is delish. Although...I wouldn't head over there if you're looking for a low-cal option, cause you won't find anything other than a Garden Salad.

We love this place!!! We're here at least once a week, although I probably shouldn't admit that. :) We've had the hot dogs, corn dog, italian sausage, fries (great with cheese), onion rings, cheese bread, pizza, beef sandwich (BBQ and plain), and more...and everything has been delicious. My husband and I are from Chicago, so this is a nice mini-trip back for us (although they really should have more White Sox gear - Go Sox!). The food is awesome and the people are great. They've recently started taking credit cards, which is also nice because we were very surprised our first trip there when they did not (we usually don't carry cash). My only complaint is that I wish they were open a little later. This is the kind of place you like to go late at night when you want a great bad-for-you snack, or when you get back into town late after a weekend away.

My fiance and I had been searching for real Italian Beef for a long time in the Twin Cities. This place is no joke. The CTA route signs and Chicago sports memorabilia all over the walls are a nice touch, too. I'm actually from Milwaukee so I appreciate the cheese curds on the menu, which I wouldn't rank above the Nitty Gritty's in Madison, but they're still very good. Let's be honest, it's all about beer, sausages, cheese, and heavy food in that part of the country. Can't go wrong.

Rob from Chris and Rob's contacted me via Yelp and asked me to call him to talk, which I did and he was very understanding of my attempts to do business with his business. He has made changes at the 7th Street restaurant and apologized for the way the manager handled business at that site. I feel he was very genuine and was happy to have read my review before this type of behavior affected his bottom line. I am looking forward to order a pizza as the ones I had last summer were really good. The owner does care about his customers. This is an addendum to my previous review placed a week ago.

I have a new crush and this place is it! We stopped in here on a lazy Saturday afternoon and I got a Chicago Style Hot Dog (my first) with everything on it and a small tator tot and an orange Fanta. LOVE LOVE LOVE! The dog (once I picked the too hot peppers off) was soooo good. **insert Homer Simpson drooling noise here.** And honestly the best tator tots I have had in years. I will never order a small again. (what was I thinking?!?!) We sat in a window and watched the world go by while taste after taste exploded in our greedy little mouths. I didn't use the bathrooms but my hubby did and he said not only were they clean but there was a hook on the door to hang your coat. Friendly staff too. Really a great time. I WILL BE BACK!!!!

Several years ago I was back in my hometown suburb of Chicago, and I went to my high school to check in and make sure that I was on the mailing list for my 25th Reunion, as I had not been to any of them. They told me that mine had been held the year before, on the 24th anniversary. I was flummoxed, miffed, pissed. I mean, you only get ONE 25th, you know? Jeez. Well, today I called C&R's to see what they were doing for National Hot Dog Day, and the nice guy on the phone said they had had 5¢ dogs yesterday! They had the date wrong! Nuts... I am now flummoxed, miffed.... but not pissed. (I'm heading over to Uncle Franky's for their all-the-dogs-you-can-eat for $10 everyday deal to celebrate instead.) OK. Down to business. I always get much more dog-nostalgic in the summer, and the hotter the day, the more I crave a real Chicago dog or two. Chris & Rob's does not disappoint in this mission. The dogs are totally authentic and true to exacting Chicago standards, and if you are a native of Greater Chicagoland, you know what I'm talking about. They even had the Vienna Beef poster warning against ketchup use, which I appreciate. Sadly, Minnesotans are still using the red stuff on dogs, a practice that makes my spine quiver. The Italian Beefs are also authentic. (NB to previous reviewer: You may have a different idea as to what an "Italian Sandwich" is supposed to be. Trust me, and the nine million other natives: Chris & Rob's is making just the right sammich.) It may not be as good as Johnny's Beef on North Ave, but it'll do nicely in lieu of a seven hour drive. I know I am getting the right thing when the guy doesn't flinch when I order mine "hot and wet." The staff is great--- real Minnesota Nice, which there is nothing wrong with. They keep things nice and tidy, and they smile. I love that. My main gripe is that, like a couple others commented here, it is a little bit of a gyp. True, they are using real-deal ingredients, imported all the way from Chicago. They likely have to figure transportation costs into the margin. But still... it gets a little spendy at times, and it would be nice to see a tad more value. Granted, I am comparing to the hundreds of Vienna stands all over Chicagoland that sell a dog wrapped up in paper with fries for under 3 bucks. Also, in Chicago I am never anything but full after a beef, which I usually pay about 4 bucks for, and I can't say that about Chris & Rob's. That's why my rating only made three stars; better value, and later hours would easily put them at a 5.

Great place to go for Chicago Style Eatery. They do it right, using Vienna Beef brand products, ect. My favorite to order here is the Italian beef & sausage combo, it'll fill ya up! Service is good, and the atmosphere is cool with the old street car dining area. My favorite place to go if I wanna get my ChiDog fix!!!

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians.
